Life without Windows or OS X

GNU/Linux is quite possibly the most important free software achievement since the original Space War, or, more recently, Emacs. It has developed into an operating system for business, education, and personal productivity. GNU/Linux is no longer only for UNIX wizards who sit for hours in front of a glowing console. Are you thinking about switching to Linux and want to learn how to use it? Have you been using GNU/Linux for some time and want to learn even more? This is the place for you.

My Mission

On Saturday, September 10, 2005 I made my first post. It was just my little thoughts on life without MS Windows or macOS. Its kind of like “Life with Gnu+Linux”. Gnu+Linux, of course, is the alternative to Windows that comes from the world of open-source. I have been using various GNU+Linux distributions since 2003. Popular Linux distributions include Debian, Fedora, and Manjaro. Commercial distributions include Red Hat Enterprise Linux and SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop. Life without windows and macOS is not as hard as it once was. The ecosystem of native GNU desktop applications is also very strong today.

This is not at hate blog. I don't hate open or closed source. I don't hate Win10 nor macOS Big Sur. I just tend to live in a world without Win10 and macOS Big Sur. Gnu and Linux are big time grass root movements. If you come to this grassroots os because you believe it the same as Windows, you will be disappointed. It is impossible for any thing to be better than something if its completely identical to it. A perfect copy can be equal, but can never surpass the first. So when you give Gnu+Linux a try in hopes that it would be better, you are hoping that it would be different.

Gnu+Linux has grown up a lot in the past 29 years  years. You get a standard set of programs, including  "LibreOffice" office suite, "OBS" screen recorder app often used by streamers, "Pidgin" for instant messaging, "K3b" for CD/DVD/BluRay burning, and "Clementine" for playing music,  also included is "UFW" for setting upfirewalls and "GParted" for managing partitions. AMD and Intel works closely with the Linux kernel and Mesa graphics teams—no need to even worry about proprietary drivers or installing anything extra. Playing most games on Linux used to require difficult workarounds and annoyingly specific hardware. That started to change after SteamOS + Linux  officially became available in 2013.

If your happy with Win10 or macOS Big Sur, that is fine, they are great operating systems. However, if your looking for friendly, easy, affordable licensing plans (per family vs. per computer),this will save you hundreds of dollars as you purchase only one operating system for multiple desktop or laptop computers.
Last but not least, I will say that you can get every conceivable utility for Linux, most at no cost, but many can't match the best Windows or Mac apps

"If monopoly persists, monopoly will always sit at the helm of government.I do not expect monopoly to restrain itself. If there are men in this country big enough to own the government of the United States, they are going to own it." (President Woodrow Wilson).
