Life without Windows or OS X

GNU/Linux is quite possibly the most important free software achievement since the original Space War, or, more recently, Emacs. It has developed into an operating system for business, education, and personal productivity. GNU/Linux is no longer only for UNIX wizards who sit for hours in front of a glowing console. Are you thinking about switching to Linux and want to learn how to use it? Have you been using GNU/Linux for some time and want to learn even more? This is the place for you.

Simple video editing software for linux

Avidemux is a free video editor designed for simple cutting, filtering, and encoding tasks. It supports many file types, including AVI, DVD compatible MPEG files, MP4 and ASF, using a variety of codecs. Tasks can be automated using projects, job queue, and powerful scripting capabilities.

It’s overkill to use a full-featured video editing program if you just want to cut a few clips from a video file. Even programs that are designed to be small can have confusing interfaces when dealing with video. We’ve found that a great free program, Avidemux, makes the job of cutting clips extremely simple.

Features

  • support for non-linear video editing, visual effects, and transcoding
  • comes with a GUI (graphical user interface) and command line interface
  • built-in video encoders for: MPEG-1, MPEG-2, FFHuffYUV, FFV1, H.263, H.263+, HuffYUV, MJPEG, MPEG-4, Snow, x264, x264, Xvid, Y800
  • built-in audio encoders for MPEG-1 Layer 3 (MP3), Vorbis, AAC, MPEG-1 layer 2 (MP2), AC-3, MPEG-1 layer 2 (MP2), Microsoft RIFF WAV PCM, LPCM
  • various output formats supported: MKV, Flash, AVI, MPEG-1/2, OGM, MP4, etc.
  • support for popular subtitle formats: SUB, SSA, ASS, SRT
  • support for muxing (multiplexing) and demuxing
  • has powerful scripting capabilities (tutorial available here)

Antergos Linux

Antergos Linux is essentially Arch Linux

Antergos is using Arch Linux from end to end, plus a repository or two for Antergos specific packages. Remove those one or two repositories, you have an Arch distribution of Linux.

Where Antergos differs from Arch comes down to the fact Antergos is built to make using GNU/ Linux simple. It uses the GNOME 3 desktop environment by default but you can also install the Cinnamon, MATE, KDE Plasma 5, Deepin, and Xfce desktops. A network connection is required to begin the installation and to automatically update the Cnchi installer prior to installation.

Manjaro Linux

Manjaro Linux is based on Arch Linux. It is not Arch. Manjaro uses its own repositories that are in no way affiliated with Arch Linux, and the only thing it shares with Arch is the fact that it’s a rolling release and is compatible with the Arch User Repository (AUR).

Unlike Arch, Manajro Linux has an extremely easy installation procedure. Most things are automated like driver installation using ‘Hardware detection’.  Key features include intuitive, a stable rolling-release model, the ability to install multiple kernels, special Bash scripts for managing graphics drivers and extensive desktop customization.By default, you are able to play almost all media formats.

The main desktop GUI is the XFCE Edition alongside KDE & GNOME. There are also community editions or spins available. They include Bspwm, Budgie, Cinnamon, Deepin, i3, LXDE, LXQT, and MATE. Manjaro ships with a good selection of desktop software. There is even an HP device manager available to help you set up your hp devices and accessories.

Linux Mint Cinnamon/Linux Mint Mate

Linux Mint is the number one Linux distribution on Distrowatch. Like many Linux distributions, Linux Mint 18.3 Cinnamon doesn’t ship with proprietary hardware drivers but installing such drivers is pretty easy. All you have to do is Launch Menu ‣ Sound & Video ‣ Install Multimedia. Codecs. Click Install then enter your password and wait for the codecs to be installed on your computer.

The latest version of Mint, 18.3  needs 2GB RAM and 1024×768 resolution, but slightly less disk space at 15GB. However, it recommends 20GB to ensure the best performance.Linux Mint tracks upstream Ubuntu long-term support (LTS) releases. This foundation means that Linux Mint gets the security and maintenance updates Ubuntu LTS users get.Linux Mint 19 will be based on Ubuntu 18.04 LTS. This gives the Linux Mint team a modern yet solid foundation on which to build. It also means Linux Mint 19 will get critical security fixes until 2023.

Operation Party Hard Ten Years later

“Operation Party Hard” celebrated the birthday of Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard with protests at Church outposts across the world. In New York close to 300 people did their best to hide their faces from Scientology’s cameras to air their grievances with the Church, though Anons assured the handful of reporters in attendance that over 9,000 others were attending similar events around the world. Protests began in Australia on March 15, 2008, and were followed by protests in major cities worldwide including Brussels, London, Seattle, Phoenix, Manchester, and Los Angeles.

Originally, Anonymous was a loosely connected group of similar-minded people from all over the world who networked online. Anonymous has no leaders, and for the most part, anyone can join Anonymous. Members of Anonymous keep their personal information and real names hidden from the public view and typically from each other. that helps to support the decentralized framework of the group.

The Church of Scientology, founded in 1953 by L. Ron Hubbard.

There are a number of disputes concerning the Church of Scientology's attempts to suppress material critical of Scientology on the Internet, utilizing lawsuits and legal threats.

  • In 1996 it sued Internet service provider Netcom over copyrighted texts posted to the newsgroup alt.religion.scientology. The case was settled out of court for an undisclosed amount.
  • The Church of Scientology sued a Karin Spaink and her Internet Service Provider over posting what church called unpublished trade secrets. In 2003 the court decided in favor of Spaink and the internet service providers on all points.
  • In 1998 Scientology sued FACTNet for claimed copyright violations. Their request was denied when a federal judge challenged Scientology's ownership of the copyrights of the documents. A settlement was reached in 1999.
  • In 2002 The Church of Scientology used the DMCA to force the Google search engine to erase its entries on the controversial anti-Scientology Web site Operation Clambake.
  • In 2008 Wikileaks published a 612-page Scientology manual on the eight Operating Thetan levels, considered secret by the Church of Scientology.
  • They attempted to remove a video from a highly publicized interview with Scientologist Tom Cruise from the Internet. YouTube removed the Cruise video from their site under threat of litigation. The website Gawker.com did not take down their copy of the Tom Cruise video.

Music Player for Linux

Clementine music player is a port of Amarok 1.4 to the Qt 4 framework and the GStreamer multimedia framework. It keeps all your music together, so it’s there when you’re ready to listen. Instead of going through stacks of CDs or digital files, you can import them into Clementine and quickly browse your whole collection. It uses your listening history to play music similar to the music you play most  which typically is music you will like but maybe haven't discovered yet.

It can also play a lot of different music file formats like MP3, Ogg Vorbis, Ogg Speex, FLAC or AAC, and music CDs.  You can also listen to music which you uploaded to your Box, Dropbox, Google Drive, and OneDrive online storage accounts.

Pop!_ OS

Pop!_OS  is pretty much a re-branded Ubuntu 17.10 Artful Aardvark. Unlike Ubuntu, Pop!_OS comes in two different versions, one for Intel /AMD graphics chipsets, and those with Nvidia graphics chipsets. Nvidia download AUTOMATICALLY downloads the Nivida drivers onto your system so your Nvidia graphics card should work right out of the box. It does not get more seamless than that. I tried both of these options and in my use case both worked perfectly.  The Intel/AMD image is 1.75GB and the NVIDIA image is 1.91GB.

You won't find Ubuntu Dock on the desktop. It uses the default Gnome application menu. There are no games, photo managers, music managers or graphics programs preinstalled, but you can install more software later via Pop! Shop.

The next Pop!_ OS will be based on Ubuntu 18.04 LTS. This gives the System 76  team a modern yet solid foundation on which to build. It also means Pop!_OS  will get critical security fixes until 2023.

* (From System 76 ) NVIDIA ISO Notes: Installs the proprietary NVIDIA driver. Does not work with Optimus; use the Intel/AMD download. Cannot be used on Secure Boot systems. Disable Secure Boot or use the Intel/AMD download.

Try Linux Without Installing It

Linux’s Live DVD allows you to test a distribution and familiarise yourself with it without having to first install it to your hard drive. You don't need any fancy hardware to run it. You just need a functioning DVD-ROM drive to run the operating system, just set your BIOS to boot from the DVD drive.

How to burn an .iso image onto a CD/DVD-ROM

Windows 8/8.1/10

  1. Download the ISO CD image to a folder on your computer.
  2. Open the folder where you have saved the ISO file.
  3. Right-click on the .iso file.
  4. From the menu select Burn disc image.
Depending on the computer you are using, there are different buttons you have to press upon boot to get to choose the boot device. You want to just start pressing that as soon as the computer begins booting up. Once you see the boot menu, select your DVD drive.

Once the DVD boots, you will be at the distro. You can use the operating system as you normally would. Because it is running from the DVD drive performance will be slower while running in a “live session”.
