Life without Windows or OS X

GNU/Linux is quite possibly the most important free software achievement since the original Space War, or, more recently, Emacs. It has developed into an operating system for business, education, and personal productivity. GNU/Linux is no longer only for UNIX wizards who sit for hours in front of a glowing console. Are you thinking about switching to Linux and want to learn how to use it? Have you been using GNU/Linux for some time and want to learn even more? This is the place for you.

What is ProtonDB?

ProtonDB is an unofficial community website that collects and displays detailed data on how an individual got a particular game to work. It tells you what Linux distribution, kernel version, graphics card type along with driver version, and last but not least, commands for launch options. The rating scale is from "Borked" to "Platinum".

The rating scale as written on ProtonDB

Platinum: Runs perfectly out of the box

Gold: Runs perfectly after tweaks

Silver: Runs with minor issues, but generally is playable

Bronze: Runs, but often crashes or has issues preventing from playing comfortably

Borked: Either won't start or is crucially unplayable

There’s about 100 games every month that get a Platinum rating according to ProtonDB. Platinum sets the bar high. Games with that rating just work out of the box like native Windows 10 or macOS 10 games without requiring end-user tweaking.

The biggest problem to overcome is the anti-cheat software that's required for many multiplayer games. Valve is working on that issue with services like Easy Anti-Cheat, but as of this posting I honestly don't see anything with that changing soon.

Linux kernel 6.1

Linux kernel 6.0 was released at the beginning of October 2022. However, the Linux kernel version 6.1 is the 2022 LTS kernel. As of now it will be maintained through December 2026, which is just a few months longer than the current Linux 5.15 LTS series that will be maintained through October 2026. The main advantage of a LTS kernels is that they receive regular updates and bug fixes, ensuring they remain stable and secure.

Video conferencing 2023

A few months ago, I reviewed an old HP with both Nobara 36 and 37. I recently got a hold of a Beelink GTR6 (borrowed it temporarily). While Beelink GTR6 is a very small nuc like mini PC compared to the HP, the differences are absolutely massive.

To be clear the Beelink GTR6 is a much-much newer system, I can't emphasize that enough. It has a faster AMD Ryzen 9 6900HX processor with a price tag of $750-850 USD. That price includes the system, power supply, motherboard, WiFi 6E, a 512GB NVMe SSD, 32GB of DDR5 memory, and as mentioned before, an AMD Ryzen 9 6900HX processor.

This post is not really going to be a review of the Beelink GTR6. I'm not going to be able to have it long enough to really do it justice. I'm going to be talking more about Nobara 37.

For those who don't know briefly, The Nobara Project, is a modified version of Fedora Linux with user-friendly fixes added to it. Think of it as the Linux Mint to Ubuntu.

After Playing around with Beelink GTR6 mini PC, Nobara 37, I say everything worked out of the box. The Wifi 6E + BT 5.2 (AMD RZ608) wireless adapter and one 2.5GB Ethernet (Intel I225-V) port all work flawlessly with Linux kernel 6.1.14. The new integrated Radeon 680M GPU  worked perfectly with mesa 23.0.0.

Video conferencing

Need to hold a virtual meeting? In 2023 it is necessity to have a video conferencing  to accommodate hybrid work. It is particularly convenient for business users in different cities or even different countries because it saves time, expenses associated with physically traveling.

With Nobara it is possible to use..Jami, Zoom, Skype, OpenMeetings, FreeConference, Google Meet, Caprine(Facebook messenger) even Microsoft teams. Whether you are a student, an office worker, or keeping in touch with family, Nobara 37 will make it easy to use UVC cameras (USB video class).

UVC-powered devices incorporate a standard video streaming functionality, meaning it automatically works with with the operating system-supplied driver and never needing to manually install it driver.

Using the 4K Webcam, DEPSTECH DW49

My DEPSTECH DW49DW49 has the the standard UVC/UVA protocol USB connector, so it's very-very easy to set up in Nobara 37. The face tracking works perfectly removing unwanted objects. The Sony image sensor goes up to a 3840*2160 resolution at 30fps.

Using Caprine-unofficial Facebook Messenger app.

The Caprine interface is exactly same as the official app, so no one should have any difficulty using it, even for the first time. Just got all the features that you expect with the official Facebook app. You can attach files, send stickers, emojis, gifs, voice clips, and take photos directly from the cam.

Using Microsoft Teams: progressive web app (PWA)

The Teams PWA offers like system notifications for chat and channel, dock icon with respective controls, and application auto-start. If you want to install the Teams PWA on Gnu/Linux, you'll need to be using Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome and Chromium web browsers.

Mozilla Firefox is not currently officially supported out of the box. For users of Firefox. You will need an add on extension. Simply download the Progressive Web extension from Firefox.

Conclusion

Video conferencing over the web is certainly not something you're going to have issues with using
Nobara 37.

The DEPSTECH (model:DW49) has a very good picture. And when I say very good picture I'm meaning for the average person, not necessarily for a professional. The camera itself works smoothly via plug & play under Nobara 37 and is ready to go out of the box. The HD 8MP Sony Sensor is very good even in poor lighting conditions and the autofocus does a good job. Definitely the more light the better. It will also easily support programs like Skype, Zoom, OBS, Facebook, YouTube and etc.

The Beelink GTR6 Mini PC with AMD Ryzen 9 6900HX SOC is a excellent mini PC. Now it has a pretty big price tag which is over $700 at the time of this post. However, the Ryzen 9 6900HX is nothing to sneeze at because it is able to hang in there with a desktop version Intel i7-10700 CPU
