Life without Windows or OS X

GNU/Linux is quite possibly the most important free software achievement since the original Space War, or, more recently, Emacs. It has developed into an operating system for business, education, and personal productivity. GNU/Linux is no longer only for UNIX wizards who sit for hours in front of a glowing console. Are you thinking about switching to Linux and want to learn how to use it? Have you been using GNU/Linux for some time and want to learn even more? This is the place for you.

JIS screwdriver

When upgrading our desktops are laptops we need proper tools. One of the most recognized types of screwdrivers in the US is the Phillips screwdriver. True most Computers and parts are held together Phillips-head screws. However more and more systems are using JIS screws. Japanese Industry Standard or JIS screws or being found in more and more equipment. Most people outside of Asia have absolutely no idea what they are. JIS have a similar appearance to  Frearson and  Phillips screws but often get damaged while removing and installing with the wrong tools.  Ninety-percent of the time, a regular Phillips will work on a JIS screw; but it’s that other 10% that wrecks everything. Looking at a JIS screwdriver next to a regular Phillips screwdriver, most people will be hard-pressed to tell the differences, but they are definitely there. Using the right tool for any given job simply makes the job easier, and it usually improves the ultimate quality of the finished product. The right tool is a JIS screwdriver, which just fits better in a JIS screw head and is designed to let you apply more torque than a Phillips driver.

PCs like the Motile 14 performance laptop use Japanese Industry Standard screws.

Most can use Pop OS

pros:

Tons of free software in the Pop!_Shop
Ubuntu foundation
Ease of installation
Modern interface
Short learning curve
Regular updates and excellent hardware support
Recognizes most legacy hardware (NVIDIA)

Cons:
Minimal number of installed apps
Higher system requirements than some distributions

GNU/Linux is associated as being an operating system for coders and programmers. However, over the last 10 years that has become old news. GNU/Linux comes in many different forms, known as 'flavors' or 'distros'. This simply means different distros are developed for different users or interests. A typical GNU/Linux distribution includes the Linux kernel; GNU OS, a GUI for displaying windows on screen and interacting with input devices, and a desktop environment.

Pop! OS Linux is a great default distro for new GNU/Linux users. Pop! OS is an off shoot of Canonicals Ubuntu Linux distribution created by System76. That means that every software made for Ubuntu is available for Pop!_OS through Pop!_Shop. Pop!_Shop is a minimal and lightweight app store shipped by default in Pop!_OS.  New versions of Pop!_OS  are released every six months, and every other year the developer Canonical releases an LTS (long term support) version of Ubuntu.

The current Pop!_OS installer, for instance, is more straightforward than the one found on Windows 10. The instructions are clear with a clear course of action. The few defult applications  has all the basics to get started. The Pop!_Shop looks great. It includes more than 100,000 pieces of software. Pop!_Shop covers every standard desktop application  you can install your preferred web browser, email software, word processing and spreadsheet applications and of course several little games. You have full access to the web, including streaming websites like Pluto TV, Tubi TV , Pop Corn Flix, Crackle, etc.

Now I will say running a GNU/Linux system is not like running macOS Catalina or Windows 10. Different distributions use different types of packages with different file extensions. Ubuntu, Pop!_OS, Debian, and similar distributions use Deb packages with the .deb file extension. PCLinuxOS, Red Hat, openSUSE, and similar distributions use .rpm packages. Things like installing programs is not always straightforward even if you use the distro's built-in app store. However Pop!_Shop  a relative newcomer to the Linux world dose a good job 9 out of 10 time.

Rival RFX-Guerrero-V Bag Gloves - HDE-F

Not a software post.

Most people associate boxing gloves with Premier Boxing Champions, black eyes and knockouts. The truth is with boxing bag gloves you do fight anyone. Bag gloves involves throwing punches at the air or at a punching bag. The Rival RFX-Guerrero-V Bag Gloves are specifically designed for bags and punch mitt use only. Punching a heavy bag feels pretty empowering too.

A great pair of quality gloves are needed by everyone who use their hands for punching. It doesn’t matter if you are a boy or girl. Big or small. Beginner or pro. You cannot just blindly buy the coolest looking or cheapest gloves out at the store. Using the wrong gloves will mess up your hands. That’s why you should invest time in choosing the best boxing gloves. Yes Winning gloves are the gold standard in boxing. If your into boxing you have heard that they feel like pillows and are of incredibly high quality. Then there are Grant boxing gloves. They are thought to be one of the highest quality boxing gloves ever made. They are well-crafted and nicely-padded. However, both Grant and Winning gloves start at $500.00 USD.

The Rival RFX-Guerrero-V Bag Gloves(HDE-F)

Rival RFX-Guerrero-V Bag Gloves

Review

I borrowed these gloves with the intention of finding the perfect 8oz fight glove which I can use for training (bag and pads). I was skeptical of a company claiming to producing a legitimate “Mexican-Style” pro boxing glove with a velcro enclosure, that are just as good as a lace-up.

These gloves are the real deal. They sport an in your face, Rival logo at the top and "hand crafted with pride" on the grip bar. It has an attached thumb connected to the fingers with a piece of leather. The wrist fasteners are unique and utilize two straps, one around the wrist and one coming down from the palm. When these straps are tightened, they really immobilize the wrist like a lace-up glove. I could barely bend my wrist back as the wrist-lock 2 provided a stung custom fit.

I love the way the RFX-Guerrero looks as well as the way they feel when I hit  my everlast Catch/Release Pads. I felt like a pro fighter. They are also great for double end bags and technical heavy bag work too (on an aqua bag, specifically). 16oz gloves on a heavy bag can give you a great work out, but people sometimes forget about their technique as they get more tired. Plus I have noticed a lot of pros use 10oz gloves to hit the heavy bag and pads.  On this HDE-F version, the leather is laminated with a high density EVA foam which makes it stiffer and firmer than the SF-F version.

The person I borrowed the bag gloves from have been using them for several months on bags/pads and they show very little signs of wear or damage. Stitching remains intact without fraying. The double stitching is pretty much perfect. I find them to be the most coolest looking bag gloves available. However I wish they came in the color gold or even metallic colors.

Conclusions

People like myself that like Winning/Grant gloves but can’t afford them should default to these Rival gloves because they are very high quality and more affordable. Gloves like the RFX-Guerrero-V which are made for bag work have high-density memory foam that last longer. The liner felt nice, and the position of my fist was very much on par with a RFX-Guerrero glove fight glove. The feel of hitting things in a fight glove is significantly different than your typical training glove. I can pretty much feel everything, and with proper hand wrapping there is no discomfort. The protection for the knuckles is quite moderate. People with knuckle problems will have some trouble. This is the first time I've tried Rivals velcro "V" strap, and it is the best custom fit outside of a lace-up glove. They are way better than my Rival Econo Bag Gloves. However the Rival Econo Bag Gloves cost about 60% less than Guerrero-V Bag Gloves. Considering what you get for under 150 dollars, I say these Guerrero Bag Gloves are well priced.

I will buy pair for myself one day...

Note: Rival RFX-Guerrero-V Bag Gloves can never be used for sparring or hitting another person. The layered foam padding is way too hard. They are for bag, punch mitt, or air use only.

The 14-inch MOTILE

https://www.thx.com/motile

A new Dell Linux developer XPS 13 laptop  will be available this month  and starts at $1,199.99. There is no lower cost option. The $1,199.99 price tag represents an i5-based Developer Edition with 8GB of RAM, a 256GB SSD, an FHD display, and with Ubuntu 18.04.03 LTS preloaded. Unless you need a 10th gen computer for high power work load there are other options. Walmart has two laptops. The MOTILE 14" Ryzen 3 (M141-RG) and the MOTILE 14" AMD Ryzen 5 (M142-RG).

Note: The MOTILE 14" M141-RG and the MOTILE 14" M142-RG comes preinstalled with MS Windows. UEFI Secure Boot can be easily disabled from the BIOS.

Installing GNU+Linux on MOTILE Performance Laptop

Which distro to choose? This is largely personal preference. I'm partial to Manjaro, but I'd advice a newcomer try Ubuntu (or Mint) as they're the distros with the most available resources online if you have doubts or questions.

When I received my laptop, I install Manjaro KDE Plasma on a Gen3 Samsung 970 250GB Evo plus NVMe drive I already owned. Everything worked out-of-the-box. My MOTILE 14" AMD Ryzen 5 (M142-RG) performed as expected during testing. It was smooth and stable running Manjaro 18.1.0 without any issue. It also ran very cool and when fan kicked on, mostly due to the excellent venting out the back.

Walmart Motile M142 Dimensions (inches): 12.6 inches x 8.4 inches x 0.75 inches

    Battery: 4100 mah lithium polymer

While never hearing of Motile previously, I decided to go ahead and buy it to replace my ageing Intel Celeron 847 Sandy Bridge, ASUS (X201E-DH01) laptop. While Microsoft Windows 10 Home is preloaded on this budget laptop, once installed Manjaro KDE Plasma ran performed as expected. This MOTILE 14" is incredible, it's thin, its light, its and metal. The Ram, SSD and WIFI can be  upgraded.

Yes System76, Dell, and Think Penguin have several high-end laptops per-installed with GNU+Linux. However there are not options under 600.00 USD. The best low end laptops are not actually preloaded with GNU/Linux, and that’s a common trend.

GNU/Linux  Pre-installed

System76: Galago Pro 14" $949.00 USD
Think Penguin: Penguin T2 $649.00 USD
Dell: Precision 3540 721.59 USD

Windows Pre-installed

Note: All 3 are popular among GNU/Linux users. They are fully compatible with Linux distro, especially Ubuntu.

MOTILE 14" M141-RG $299.00 USD
MOTILE 14" M142-RG $399.00 USD
Acer: Aspire E 15 $424.00 USD

System76s Galago Pro is one of the best high-end Ultrabooks in the world. It offers an all-aluminum design and lots of processing power. Its 10th gen i5-10210U out paces both Acer MOTILE and Acer systems by a wide margin. If you work with raw HD, 4K video or create special effects the Galago Pro 14" is hard to top. However for most people everyday computing is happening in a web browser. So with the budget MOTILE 14 and Aspire E 15 you do not get the biggest possible hard drives or the most powerful processors. No one wants to spend $1000.00 USD  just to look at Face Book and watch Pluto TV.

Conclusion

You won't find a better value than the MOTILE 14 M142-RG ($399.00). With a high-powered 2nd Gen AMD Ryzen 5 Mobile Processor and Radeon Vega 8 Graphics you can stream online videos or surf the web. The screen stretches nearly to the bezels. You typically do not see a full HD screen at this price point. Walmart's MOTILE 14 is one of the most beautiful laptops on the market right now, with its all aluminum  design and sleek profile. This system is very upgrade-able. It has a free NVME slot for a second hard drive and the ram is not soldered to the board. MY Asus X201 cost around 300.00 USD in 2014 and as 2020 still works. It runs Linux mint xfce as a daily driver. We really do need low-end pre-installed opensource systems.
